Scotland
There has been a Scottish Region of the UKHA since 1989. The committee and regional members in Scotland are committed to improving the professional standing of housekeepers and to the promoting of housekeeping as a career.
Our Scotland Chair, Ruth Clark graduated from Fife College with an HND in Hospitality Management. She began her career as Housekeeping Supervisor working for Marriot, then moved into smaller luxurious properties throughout Scotland and the UK. She is currently working as Head Housekeeper at the Isle of Eriska Hotel and Spa, near Oban.
We hold our meetings monthly between September and June, visiting member’s hotels and workplaces right across the region. The meetings are an ideal opportunity for housekeepers to network with each other, and also with associate regional and national suppliers. We have hosted the summer ball on several occasions giving other regions the chance to come and sample true Scottish hospitality.
Ruth Clark - Scotland Chair
Head Housekeeper at the Isle of Eriska Hotel and Spa, near Oban
I currently work at the Isle of Eriska Hotel and Spa as Head Housekeeper, where my team and I look after rooms and suites in the main house, plus the lodges and cottages in the grounds. This stunning hotel is nestled on its own private island off the west coast of Scotland, the epitome of luxury hospitality with a rich history dating back to 1884.
Background
I graduated with an HND in Hospitality Management back in 1994 from Fife College, Kirkcaldy, from there I started off working in large hotels such as the Marriott Dalmahoy and the old Forth Bridges Hotel (now demolished).
From the large hotels I then moved into small mainly privately run hotels such as Castle Stewart in Inverness, Ardanaiseig Hotel, and Holbeck Ghyll.
I trained as a General Manager at Highland Heritage Coach Tours before running the Crianlarich Hotel for a year. From there I secured a position on the 5 star Hebridean Princess where I was for 3 and a half years.
I have worked at Dundas Castle in South Queensferry, helped set up and open the Machrie Hotel on the Isle of Islay and worked at Pittormie Castle, Bridge of Orchy Hotel and Cameron House.
Throughout my career, I have always favoured Housekeeping however I have worked in all departments.
As Scotland Chair s I feel I would like to help the association as I have free time to give. I am always looking for new challenges, I attend every meeting and I like to meet people and I am a Housekeeper. I also believe I can bring new and fresh ideas to the committee. I am very passionate about Housekeeping and I hope that my passion would rub off on others who attend the meetings.
- I have made meetings more inclusive for everyone, I speak to everyone who attends to make them feel welcome.
- I listen to all ideas and action them for future meetings.
- I help and give advice to members and non-members alike.
- I attend events to try and raise the profile of the UKHA.
- I have appointed some new members to the committee, one of which is a housekeeper, and re-instated some previous members.
- I am a passionate individual who's career has spanned 30 years in the Hospitality industry.
