The Yorkshire & NE members met at Harewood House on the outskirts of Leeds on Wednesday 29th May
Meeting Review
We were treated to a wonderful evening at Harewood when we met at the Harewood Estate
for our May meeting, and from there our tour of the estate began.
We travelled by tractor and trailer through the estate while enjoying the warm summer’s
evening. Seeing the many Red and Fallow deer in the Deer Park was a highlight, and we
even had Felicity as our guide giving us lots of historical information relating to Harewood as
we travelled. Our destination was Harewood House itself, and the infamous butler Molly met
us at the door. We were then given a front of house and below stairs tour which was very
interesting and informative, particularly Molly’s Pantry which was so organised and tidy!
A couple of particular highlights were the classical and modern works of art, lavatories that
look like wooden chairs and fantastic views across the surrounding parkland. We felt very
special seeing the House at that time of the evening as we had the whole place to ourselves.
After our House tour we travelled to see one of the luxury cottages which the estate lets out
to visiting guests. “Oak House” sleeps six and is nestled within its own pretty country garden.
From Oak House, we moved on to the recently opened events centre called “The Hovels”
where we enjoyed a delicious Barbecue and drinks, including Gin distilled on the estate.
We concluded the evening by meeting with our host and estate director Ben Lascelles, who
welcomed us and outlined his role at the Harewood Estate.
It was such an enjoyable and interesting evening made so special by our super hosts Felicity
and Molly, who we would like to thank them for their time and kindness.
