Scottish Region meeting report - February 2017
Our first meeting of 2017 was held for the first time in Dundee at the Malmaison Hotel. It was great to see so many local Housekeepers attend for their first taste of the UKHA and we look forward to welcoming them along to future meetings.
Our main speaker was Emma White from Archie Foundation the official charity of Tayside Children’s Hospital. Following on from successful campaigns to raise money for Aberdeen and Inverness Children’s Hospitals they are aiming to raise £2 million to help fund a twin operating theatre at Ninewells Hospital. At present there is only one paediatric operating theatre which can only cope with 50% of the operations needed therefore the other 50% happen in the adult theatres. They will be converting an old part of the teaching hospital to make a modern facility with better accommodation for both patients and parents.
There are constant fund raising initiatives throughout the year – the biggest story however was the Oor Wullie bucket trail last year. 50 sculptures were decorated by sponsored companies and individuals and then positioned throughout the city. A map was sold for a donation and you could then walk and collect selfies with them # oor selfies. Another 12 were on tour throughout Scotland and then 2 were in the main stations in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
One was in the children’s outpatient dept and the children could add their own handprints, they loved being involved.
At the farewell event people were queuing for hours to be able to see them all and the Auction raised a staggering £883,000 – far more than anyone was expecting. They are still raising thousands for the charity with one shop’s Christmas window raising £10,000.
Thank you to everyone who brought raffle tickets to our meeting, we were able to make a donation ourselves.
For the second part of the meeting we watched the report on Rip off Britain regarding the cleanliness of Hotel bedrooms. This then led to a lively discussion regarding the points raised.
Thank you to Lucy and her team at the Malmaison for their hospitality and for arranging a showround.
